The surfaces of her work tend to be tactile, gritty and textural, exploring the use of latext and oil paint simultaneously, frequently adding plaster to the mix. A recurring exploration for Jean is the action and outcome that intuitively happens between the surfaces she creates. The underlaying surface of mark-making and gestural brush strokes often run wild, colorful and free, while the muted top layer struggles to calm, conceal and veil over the chaotic undercurrent.
