Corn, Corn, Corn, Gender Fluidity, Corn on view: October 10 – November 7 reception: Wednesday, October 21, 4-6pm open gallery hours: Wednesdays 5-7p, Saturdays 1-3p This art exhibit combines 35mm black-and-white film photography and fiber arts to document one of the road trips my transgender teenager and I took across state lines so they could receive gender-affirming healthcare, which was banned in Iowa. Our collaboration grew into both an exploration of the medium and of art as a way to communicate, process, and build our own relationship. We took turns behind and in front of the camera, making images that include portraits, the Iowa landscape, borders, and letters we received from healthcare providers. We played with different photographic techniques including double exposures and solarization to layer images and create disorientation. Colorful quilted frames hug the photographic prints in two contrasting modes: The safe, orderly rectangular frames of new fabric, and a crazy-quilt technique using found fabric from our home and childhoods, evoking frenetic caregiving.
