This pottery class is designed for young artists ages 6-14 to have the opportunity to explore the world of clay with the focus primarily on hand-building techniques. Over three consecutive sessions, they’ll learn to shape, sculpt, and create unique pieces using methods like pinching, coiling, and slab construction, encouraging their creativity and fine motor skills. As a special highlight, the class also offers a chance to experience the potter’s wheel, where children can feel the excitement of forming a vessel on a spinning surface. After their creations have been carefully crafted, they’ll undergo a bisque firing, turning the clay into sturdy, unglazed pottery. In the final session, students will apply colorful glazes to their pieces, which will then be fired again, resulting in beautiful, finished artworks. This combination of traditional hand-building, introductory wheel work, and the complete pottery process makes the class both fun and educational, providing a well-rounded introduction to the art of pottery. My name is Anna Wilkins, and I am a proud native Wyomingite, now residing in Summerville. My passion for art, specifically in ceramics, began in high school and deepened as I took college courses in ceramics and worked at the university studio as an onsite manager at Montana State University of Billings. I graduated with a B.A. in psychology, but continued my love for the ceramics world by teaching ceramics to kids at a summer camp in Maine. Then my husband and I began traveling around the U.S. for work, and later took a sabbatical to travel internationally, where I expanded my ceramics education by creating in places like Japan, Portugal, and Mexico. I’m excited to get back into teaching ceramics because it brings me immense joy to inspire others, spread my knowledge of pottery, and share the art of ceramics with people eager to learn and create. *Pottery must be picked up within 90 days from the last day of class. The teacher will email you to let you know when it is ready for pick up. Any artwork not picked up within this timeframe will be donated or discarded.*
