Ridgewood's residential streets tell the story of the Village's evolution from an eighteenth century Dutch farming settlement to a fashionable railroad suburb for New York's commuters, and finally to the vibrant community it is today. As the railroad brought growth in the late nineteenth century, the Village blossomed with high-style architecture Gothic Revival mansions like the Graydon House, Queen Anne residences such as the rare Henry Hudson Holly design, and grand Victorian homes built for New York's affluent businesspeople seeking a country retreat. The twentieth century brought an extraordinary range of styles as Ridgewood's population quadrupled: Tudor and Colonial Revivals, Arts and Crafts bungalows, Swiss Chalets, Dutch Colonials, Spanish Eclectic and Mediterranean Revival homes, French Renaissance and Craftsman designs many built by skilled builder architects rather than named architects, yet unified by shared materials like shingle, stucco, stone, and brick that give neighborhoods like The Heights their harmonious character. Later developments, like the postwar Cape Cods of Glen Acres, reflect the Village's mid-century growth. The presentation will highlight how these varied styles coexist to create Ridgewood's distinctive streetscapes where a colonial farmhouse might stand blocks from a Tudor Revival or a modernist landmark like the James Rose House and how this architectural diversity reflects the broader history of New Jersey's railroad suburbs.
