How Dogs Play explores the complex presence of aggression in intimacy, excavating the seen and unseen ruptures between self and other. In a tumult of childlike play, rivalrous antics, and feats of maniacal athleticism, this work tunes the dial of intensity to animate an underworld of feeling. We work, dare, push the edge, cross that line, slipping between human, animal, and monster. This dance is for the State Champ, the Junkie, the Hustler, those who push their bodies into the unknown, chasing the sensational and the spiritual. Amelia Heintzelman choreography & performance Brendan Elefante, Jack Dexter performance Tommy Martinez sound Tess Michaelson dramaturgy Sylvie Hayes-Wallace, Zo Roze costume Shana Crawford lighting “Amelia Heintzelman charged the space with a burst of energy wavering formidably between violence and vulnerability.” –Gia Kourlas, New York Times A livestream will be available free of charge at 8pm on the day of the performance and archived for future viewing. Amelia Heintzelman is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Her work has been supported by residencies, commissions, and grants through Center for Performance Research, Draftwork at Danspace Project, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Issue Project Room, Movement Research at the Judson Church, New York Foundation for the Arts, Pageant, Snug Harbor, and UCross Foundation. Most recently, she’s worked as a collaborating performer for Kim Brandt, Jesi Cook, Ayano Elson, Deborah Hay, Melinda Ring and Alexa West. She is on teaching faculty at Movement Research and Pageant, and rarely/sometimes teaches Comedy Pilates. photos by Tanya Navasiolava How Dogs Play explores the complex presence of aggression in intimacy, excavating the seen and unseen ruptures between self and other.
