About this event
One of 3 upcoming events at San Ysidro Civic Center, and 2,767 across San Diego.
By Mario Vega Directed by Maria Patrice Amo In the Spring of 2021, the San Diego Convention Center is being used as a holding facility for young asylum seekers. Milli and Lupe are hired as youth care workers to help take care of the unaccompanied migrant children being held there. As the months go by, they must adjust to the changing rules and restrictions at their job. Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center is Vega’s second world premiere production with TuYo, the first being the immersive musical “Pásale Pásele.” The production also follows TuYo’s “Everything You Need To Know About Abortion In One Hour Or Less,” an educational story about women’s reproductive rights, and the spooky and immersive sold-out run of “La Llorona On The Blue Line.” Vega’s Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center tackles the heavy subject of immigration with care and humor, capturing the stories of these migrant girls and encouraging audiences to have a conversation about not just migration, but the consequences of borders on children and our responsibility as human beings to take care of each other. Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Centeris being produced in support and collaboration with Casa Familiar. Casa is the leading service and community development organization in the community of San Ysidro, providing over 40 bilingual programs and services at six different sites in the community. Programs range from Civic Engagement to Health & Social Services, Arts & Culture to Education. In 2021, Casa Familiar was one of the organizations that provided 24-hour youth care for migrant children at the San Diego Convention Center. Get Your Tickets
