From Sarah P. Duke Gardens

Join Alec Motten, professor emeritus, Duke University Department of Biology, on a guided tour of the Duke Research Greenhouse’s teaching collection, which includes amazing specimens from a wide diversity of terrestrial habitats, ranging from hot, dry deserts to humid tropical rainforests. Marvel at the diverse ways plants have evolved to live in very different habitats, and compare the striking modifications in color, shape and anatomical features that allow them to thrive and survive in extreme environments. Also admire the teaching collection’s impressive array of carnivorous plants from all over the world—not only North Carolina and North America, but also South America, Australia and Southeast Asia. Closely examine the myriad ingenious ways carnivorous plants have evolved to capture and consume their animal prey. Location: Duke Research Greenhouse; directions will be included in program reminder email sent the week before. Fee: $30, 20% discount for Duke Gardens members with discount code. Parking: Parking included in the program cost. Accessibility: This will be a small group program that takes place primarily standing indoors in a location accessible by paved surfaces with moderate inclines.
