About this event

On Daisy

One of 58 upcoming events at The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, and 3,239 across Philadelphia.

From The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education

This workshop will demonstrate step-by-step how to use invasive plants to make fabric dye. Natural dyes have been used for millennia. Today, weavers and knitters are seeking environmentally friendly, non-toxic dyes for their wool and cotton yarns. We will display a wide range of fabric samples that have been dyed with: Barberry (Berberis thunbergii), Wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius), Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), Amur cork tree bark (Phellodendron amurense), and Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.). Each participant will be able to dye a cotton bandana themselves in a choice of dyes. Tickets
