Step inside Emily Dickinson’s world. Joyce DiDonato describes how the production’s intimate staging draws audiences beyond Dickinson’s physical surroundings and into the poet’s inner world: “We wanted people to feel as if they begin the evening in Emily’s tiny room,” said DiDonato of the set design. “But before they know it, they are immersed in her inner world that can take one to the edges of a ‘finite infinity’ or plunge them into the ticking time bomb of inner mania. This juxtaposition of her tiny, pristine room against the raging questions of existence — and everything in between — is inherently dramatic and compelling. Of course, the music on its own is deeply compelling, but why not invite the audience to go even further?” Renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato takes center stage in Emily – No Prisoner Be, an extraordinary collaboration with the genre-defying string trio Time for Three. Set to music by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Kevin Puts, the work weaves 24 poems by Emily Dickinson into a continuous musical journey. Enhanced by evocative lighting and subtle staging, the performance blends music and theater with striking immediacy and intimacy. Voice and strings move in close dialogue, drawing listeners into Dickinson’s inner world, a realm of emotional depth, spiritual searching, and fierce individuality. Emily – No Prisoner Be is a bold and deeply personal exploration of resilience, identity, and the courage to live authentically. DiDonato and Time for Three invite audiences into a musical journey that confronts confinement, both literal and emotional, and ultimately celebrates freedom, transformation, and hope.
