FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTION | November 2026

Friday, November 6 | 5-8pm The Warner Gallery Robert C. Shields American SeriesMixed Media: Artists Experiment! “A pair of socks is no less suitable to make a painting with than wood, nails, turpentine, oil, and fabric.” –Robert Rauschenberg, 1959 Mixed Media presents an expanded view of SBMA’s permanent collection, highlighting works by over 90 regionally- and nationally-prominent artists who combine and experiment with materials and processes. Throughout the 20th and 21st century, artists have continuously pushed the boundaries of how art is made and defined, incorporating “non-art” materials, rejecting traditional formats, upending hierarchies of medium, and placing disparate elements in conversation. The artists in Mixed Media draw on techniques such as collage, photomontage, and assemblage alongside traditional media, producing results that are surprising, profound, disturbing, and humorous.
