REGISTER Instructor: Chaney Williams Project: Mini Improv Hanging Quilts Inspiration: Erin N. Mack: RARE ESSENCE Join textile/ fiber artist Chaney Williams to create your own mini hanging quilt inspired by Erin Mack’s installation at the Speed! Participants will be creating a hand-pieced and sewn mini improv quilt that can be hung on a wall or framed. We will spend 10 minutes exploring and journaling our reactions to Erin Mack’s exhibit in Gheen’s Court before starting to pick our materials to make our own tiny quilt inspired by the installation. Beginners are welcome, and the project will be sewn entirely by hand! Chaney will demonstrate and help participants with threading a needle and doing a basic running stitch, making a quilter’s knot, making the mini improv quilt top, and binding. Supplies and printed instructions included! Bio: Chaney Williams (she/her) is a full spectrum doula, writer, and fiber/ textile artist. She lives in Central Kentucky and is a columnist for “The African American Folklorist Journal”, a recipient of two Kentucky Arts Council Traditional/Folk Arts Apprenticeship grants for quilting and sewing garments, and is an Artist Enrichment grantee from Kentucky Foundation for Women. For Chaney, her creative practice and reproductive justice work is the way she makes sense of the world she exists in. It is how she finds belonging in the universe and connects to their ancestors, future descendants, and the collective.
