Register by September 7! Embark on a one-of-a-kind cultural experience that blends art, storytelling, and fresh perspectives to explore the meaning of work in everyday life. We’ll visit the Whiting Mills and the American Mural Project in Winsted, CT. Our day begins at Whiting Mills, a vibrant hub for creativity and community, located next door to the American Mural Project (AMP). Explore this historic mill complex—thoughtfully transformed into a dynamic space for artists, makers, and small businesses on a self-guided tour of working studios and unique retail shops featuring handmade goods. With over 50 tenants including artists, photographers, and craftspeople, Whiting Mills offers a fascinating glimpse into a thriving creative community and the chance to participate in “retail therapy.” After lunch, we’ll continue next door at the AMP. Founded in 2001, the American Mural Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the dignity of work while inspiring young people to dream big. At its heart is an awe-inspiring achievement: the largest indoor collaborative artwork in the world—a breathtaking three-dimensional mural stretching 120 feet long and rising five stories high. The vision began in 1999 with artist Ellen Griesedieck, inspired by the immense scale of Boeing’s 747 fabrication plant during a visit, connected to her series of paintings celebrating American workers. As her concept evolved, so did her mission to not only depict the spirit of work, but to actively involve others, especially children, in bringing the mural to life. This remarkable tribute captures a century of American history through the lens of its workers—from heart surgeons to steelworkers, farmers to athletes, and assembly line workers to aerospace innovators. Through partnerships with organizations such as NASA, Boeing, Habitat for Humanity, and HealthCorps, AMP has engaged more than 15,000 students and adults nationwide in hands-on artistic collaboration. We’ll enjoy a 90-minute docent-guided tour of the Mural Exhibit experience making the art come to life with anecdotes about the workers and the artist’s process. Prepare to be inspired by this extraordinary space, the work of art, and the powerful stories it tells. Guide: Jeanne Fontaine Sunday, September 20; 9:30 am – 4 pm Includes guided tours, admissions, boxed lunch option, bus travel and driver gratuity. Register Now Itinerary
