Landscapes in Flux- Artist Talk with David Gloman

Painting en plein air, or directly outdoors, can be an incredibly rewarding but difficult challenge for artists working quickly and decisively to capture their subject. David Gloman, a plein air landscape painter active in the Connecticut River Valley, paints to capture his relationship to the world by exploring and giving form to the space between himself and his objects. His artwork is more about the journey of looking rather than the complete end result of looking. When viewed together, Gloman’s paintings are a synthesis of past and present experiences. His work, in all its incarnations, has always been about light and a form of linear geometry; two seemingly incongruent, disparate perceptions. The process of visual distillation—in which elements of a composition, such as line and texture, are subtracted or reduced—allows the essence of his subjects to shine. By refining visual stimuli and leaving only the essentials, his technique has a clarifying effect, capturing a sense of place and the feeling of a fleeting instance. In Landscapes in Flux, currently on exhibit at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Gloman sets his sights towards our beloved New England scenery, returning to the same locations at different times of day and seasons.
