How do artistic representations of the land influence the ideas and identity of a nation? Based on her latest book, Disaster Nation: An Ecocritical Study of Puerto Rican Culture, Professor María Acosta Cruz will demonstrate how artistic depictions of the environment have influenced the national identity of Puerto Rico. While often depicted as a tranquil island paradise, Puerto Rico has been shaped by centuries of disaster, both natural and manmade. Using examples ranging from pre-historic ceramics to nineteenth century painter Francisco Oller, and selections from the current Springfield Museums exhibit Markets, Foodways, and the Essence of Place: Works from the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Acosta Cruz will explore the connections between art, identity, and environment. Presented by María Acosta Cruz, author and Professor of Spanish, Clark University Join us in-person or online! If you plan to attend in person at the Museums, tickets are available on the day of the lecture in the Welcome Center.
