From Stand Up NY

Please join us for an evening of standup comedy by artist Mina Cheon, aka MJ, Standup Korean. “MJ’s Hour Art Activism” is an interwoven cultural comedy hour that includes topics of Korean shame, New York sex, Asian stereotypes, global geopolitics, marriage-divorce-parenting, life and death, art and comedy, and her signature set of art history jokes. This event is part of the Global K-Comedy series, which has rocked Times Square and showcased in Maryland and Los Angeles with the most loved Korean American and Asian American talents today. MJ’s hour at the House of Nancy is a sequel to her performance at the Olin Auditorium of Whitman College this year, coinciding with her art shown in an exhibition at the Sheehan Gallery and The Maxey Museum. This presentation is her continued, dedicated effort to bridge the worlds of art and comedy with laughter at the forefront for peacebuilding in today’s divided worlds. Known for her provocative peace work on the Korean Peninsula with art and activism, and human rights advocacy, artist Mina Cheon is MJ presenting the merger of art and comedy ideas in this hour, citing, “Like art, laughter is a gift and a profound human experience. Artists and comedians are alike, they are the truth-sayers and peace-makers of our time.” This show at the House of Nancy in Brooklyn will include opening acts by an all-Korean American comedian lineup, with feature performance by the rising star Alex Kim (Lincoln Center), opening by the noble-comedian Chris Min (SPEAK: Heritage), and hosted by the funniest Korean comic of Harlem Jae Shin (Sesame Street). Seats are limited in the beautiful and intimate theatre space of House of Nancy, please reserve your seat today! MJ Standup Korean aka Dr. Mina Cheon is a prominent Korean political pop artist, scholar, and former art college dean turn comedian currently based in New York. Her unique comedy style blends her academic background with stand-up, featuring observational, satiric, and dark romantic humor driven by art history jokes and message-driven social commentary. Merging the worlds of art and comedy, her performance includes MJ's Hour: K-Comedy Art Activism at institutions like Whitman College, as well as performing in and producing cultural events for the AHL Foundation, KODA NY, and the series Stand Up NY Presents K-Comedy. As a scholar and creative visionary who has mounted major retrospectives and authored books like Shamanism + Cyberspace (Atropos Press, 2009), she uses her platform to bridge the gap between socio-political activism and the healing power of laughter. She is the producer of K-Comedy and at Stand Up NY as the Chief Talent Curator and Head of Creative Programming. House of Nancy is a community-focused queer bar, cafe, and performance space located in the heart of Bushwick. The venue serves as a hub for local LGBTQ+ nightlife, hosting a consistent rotation of drag shows, burlesque, stand-up comedy, and cabaret performances. MJ has been invited to perform on their comedy shows, which welcome diversity and talents from all cultural backgrounds. It is the first K-Comedy show in Brooklyn and the first Stand Up NY Presents project here. Founded in 1986, Stand Up NY is one of New York City’s most historic comedy clubs and has helped launch and showcase some of comedy’s biggest stars over the past four decades. Located in Time Square, the club continues to be a major cultural hub for stand-up comedy, producing hundreds of shows annually while also expanding nationally through its live event division, Stand Up NY Presents. The company has recently produced successful comedy experiences in unique venues and private clubs across New York and Los Angeles, focusing on curated, experiential entertainment that goes beyond the traditional comedy format. *Upon entering the space, please have your ticket confirmation email ready to be shown and wait to be seated
