About this event
One of 42 upcoming events at Stormwater Studios.
Join emerging artist Lenayah Rayford on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 6–7 p.m. at Stormwater Studios for an artist talk about The Mane Issue, her solo exhibition concluding her yearlong residency as our 2025–2026 Resident Artist. Rayford’s work explores Black hair, identity, perception, beauty standards, comfort zones, and self-acceptance through sculpture and painting. During the artist talk, hear more about the inspiration behind the exhibition, her creative process, and the ideas that shaped this body of work. For Rayford, hair has never been just hair. Hair can hold stories, memories, pride, creativity, and identity, while also being subject to scrutiny and judgment. The Mane Issue examines the lasting impact of Eurocentric beauty standards and the ways those expectations can shape how we understand ourselves and others. The exhibition brings together representational sculptures and abstract paintings. While the sculptures confront social and cultural narratives surrounding Black hair, the abstract works explore creative freedom, reflection, release, and self-definition. Together, the works consider the complexities of the Black experience and the ongoing journey toward embracing diverse forms of self-acceptance.
