Reading for Change is a free virtual monthly book club presented by the Stowe Center for Literary Activism in partnership with CREC, with River Bend Bookshop as our book partner. Our book selections are drawn from Stowe Prize shortlists and winners—works that engage with social justice, tell honest histories, and model how we can all be part of change for good. Through our partnership with CREC, we invite educators to read alongside us, join these community conversations, and explore how the ideas and questions raised by each book can continue in their own learning communities. Get the Book Our friends at River Bend Bookshop are offering Reading for Change participants 10% off Stowe Prize books. Mention the Stowe Center at checkout when shopping in person, or use code STOWEFORCHANGE when purchasing online. BUY THE BOOK HERE! Join Anna Malaika Tubbs and Arianna Baret Peralta in a community conversation on Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us! In Erased, Anna Malaika Tubbs, the New York Times bestselling author of The Three Mothers, returns with an unflinching excavation of all that American patriarchy has tried to destroy. Patriarchy has ruled across the world throughout much of human history, but it operates differently in each nation in which it is found. In Erased, Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs investigates how our understanding of human identity in the United States has been determined since the founding fathers’ drafting of the Constitution, in which they excluded women from equal rights, protected the institution of slavery, and suppressed Indigenous belief systems. Spanning the full, unfiltered history of the nation, this groundbreaking history makes clear how deeply ingrained in politics, culture, and society our unique gendered hierarchy truly is and has been for nearly 250 years. Told with Tubbs’s trademark blend of rigorous research and accessible storytelling, Erased asks readers to suspend blaming themselves or one another for the struggles we face as a country and instead turn their attention toward an inequitable system that leaves none of us unscathed. Timely and eye-opening, Erased brings hope and guidance for letting go of American patriarchy once and for all. Facilitators Anna Malaika Tubbs is a 2X New York Times Bestselling author who grew up in Dubai, Mexico, Sweden, Estonia, Azerbaijan, as well as the United States. Influenced by her exposure to all kinds of cultures and beliefs, Anna is inspired to bring people together through the celebration of difference. Anna holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University. She takes from her academic background and produces content that is easy for others to connect with and understand. Arianna Baret Peralta is the manager of Asset Management Technology at Eversource Energy, she’s been with the company since 2009 and has held various roles in the Engineering and Operations organizations. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from INTEC (Dominican Republic) and a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from WPI. Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, she moved to the US in 2006 and has been a CT resident ever since. Arianna believes in the positive impact volunteering work has in our communities and has volunteered with several nonprofit organizations across CT (Special Olympics, Autism Speaks, Operation Fuel, JA of Southwest New England, United Way, American Heart Association). Animal lover, big fan of laughs.
