The Road to WinterWonderGrass features Billy Failing, Johnny Mullenax, and Bronwyn, each with a distinct take on bluegrass. Failing pairs inventive banjo playing with original songs, Mullenax brings funk and rock into the mix, and Grammy-winning fiddler Bronwyn shares music from her latest album, Rattlin’ Bones. Billy Failing Billy is a Colorado-based banjo player, guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is best known for his longtime contribution as a banjo player with Grammy Award-winning guitarist Billy Strings, as well as for his original voice, banjo playing, and songwriting as the frontman of his own project. With an intriguing focus on both tradition and innovation, he pays homage to the roots of bluegrass and acoustic music, while exploring its boundaries and devising a unique modern interpretation of classic sounds. Johnny Mullenax Johnny, a Tulsa native, grew up in a musical family. He started playing the guitar at age 5. In his teens, he followed his family to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In typical Johnny fashion, he showed up with just a guitar and ended up sleeping in a stand-up bass case. At 18, he used a friend’s ID to get into a club, where he joined a live hip-hop band backing rappers. According to Johnny, “Life is too short to play one style of music, and if you have an opportunity to try something different then you should give it a shot.” Claiming wide-ranging influences from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, Johnny calls his genre-bending sound a funky country bluegrass good time! Bronwyn Bronwyn, a Grammy-winning artist and two-time IBMA “Fiddle Player of the Year,” decided to purposely leave her comfort zone and dive headfirst into songwriting for her third album, Rattlin’ Bones. “If I’m going to be an artist and a front person, I’m going to need my own material that fits the live show,” Bronwyn says. Her debut album, Fiddler’s Pastime (2020), showcased her fiddle playing, while I Built A World (2024) introduced her singing style. Bronwyn’s time with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway helped her develop her voice. “There was a large part of my life where I didn’t sing and was only interested in playing the fiddle,” she says. “But being on tour with Golden Highway and around Molly and Shelby, these great female bluegrass vocalists, it shifted everything.” Now fronting her own band, Bronwyn has been playing songs from Rattlin’ Bones on the road. *Donors of $500 or more to the 2027 Annual Fund receive presale access.
