He also tours and performs with Elephant Revival, bringing his versatile musicianship to one of the country’s most beloved modern string bands. His 2025 release, The Long Branch Sessions, recorded in a cabin with Duncan Wickel, offers an unvarnished take on traditional music, while his work under the name CASTANEA explores rhythm and texture through electronic forms. She also works with music, literature, watercolor, and plants–for medicine and for fun. She grew up on a family farm near Fillmore, Iowa, learning piano from her grandmother, and singing at weddings, parties, and funerals with her four brothers. Other patient and beloved piano teachers were Kay McDonnell and Lori Knuth. After moving to Colorado, Peg took one guitar lesson from Sandy Monroe (a prize won at the KDNK Labor of Love Auction.) She also has jammed and sung with musicians such as Frank Martin, Jimmy Ibbotson, Doug McLain, Steve and Molly Child, Jim Collins, and Kim Spence. Just this summer, Peg attended Richard Thompson’s Friends & Family Acoustic Guitar & Songwriting Camp in Big Indian, New York, where she worked directly with Mary Gauthier and Teddy Thompson. Peg is delighted to be part of The Roommates band led by William H. Macy, her friend and neighbor. Peg’s favorite color is apricot yellow, and her favorite smell is a wild, thriving juniper tree. Dana Underwood grew up in Barrington, Illinois and fell in love with music at an early age. She began taking piano lessons at six and at around ten years old started writing songs. She couldn’t get enough of the vinyl records her parents used to play and was fascinated by how music could move people to laugh, cry, dance, or to just ponder something new. She especially remembers singing along to John Denver, Neil Diamond, Joan Baez, and the Evita soundtrack in those early years. In high school, Dana joined the choir and then went on to study music at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Later, she picked up the guitar and began performing around the Chicago area before eventually moving to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2012. Soon after, she began performing full-time with her music partner at the time, Haden Gregg, and they spent nearly a decade playing together throughout the valley. When she’s not working, she spends as much time as possible exploring the backcountry. She feels incredibly fortunate to call this place home and is deeply in love with the surroundings here.
