Frank Gonzales Watercolor Crayon Still Life Workshop

Date/Time: Saturday, October 24, 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM, MST in the Elm Room at the Clark Park Recreation Center. Supplies: Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle Artists’ Pastels – Set of 10, Assorted Colors (Watercolor crayons), cotton rag paper, 6 x 6 or 8×8 or sketchbook size, (alternative: Bristol paper), a small object to draw. Frank thinks it might be fun to combine people’s objects to create a collaborative still life so people could choose their crayon colors based on their objects. Another option: participants buy 2-6 individual crayons and be prepared to share. Individually, watercolor crayons are about $3 each at Jerry’s Art Supply. He received his BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2003. His work explores ornithological subjects, organic and plant elements and color. In his own words: As we try to understand the phenomena of nature by neatly labeling, dividing and categorizing, I approach my understanding by weaving elements of science and imagination. Exploring possibilities through the language of paint, I am able to blur the lines between reality and ideas. I like the spontaneity of starting with a background color or single image as a jump off point for the rest of the painting. One image will spark another and the process takes shape from there. I find this way of working to be both exciting and uncertain. My various marks and color glitches mimic this uncertainty resulting in a visual stillness and movement. His work is included in both private and public collections around the world including the Ampersand Boutique Hotel in London, The Orange County Children’s Hospital, and Starbucks, Bank of America and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. His work has been featured in numerous publications and Online Text including American Art Collector Magazine, Juxtapoz, Booooom and Colossal. Franks work was also featured on the cover of American Art Collector Magazine in 2010. He recently designed a terrazzo floor for the 24th Street Sky Tram station at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport scheduled to open to the public Summer 2022. Title of presentation: Watercolor Crayon Still Life Description of presentation: Frank will introduce participants to this portable, vibrant medium and share techniques and tips to make impactful still life compositions. Frank says: Paper: Frank prefers to work on cotton rag paper that he tears down to 6 x 6 or 8×8 or sketchbook size, He listed Bristol paper as an alternative. ( I checked Amazon and 100 sheets of 7 x10 homemade watercolor paper is available for $13.99 under the cotton rag paper. 2. Crayons: Frank will be using Neocolor II, by Caran d’Ache, which are water soluble, but he likes their opacity and doesn’t water activate them. He said we could bring a water brush or regular brushes as a water cup if we want to experiment with activating them. Marie bought a set for people to share. I suggest people buy 2-6 individual crayons and be prepared to share. Individually they are $3 each at Jeri’s. I have bought the at Arizona Art Supply but it has been awhile.
