Watercolor & Gouache Painting Workshop with Edward Sprafkin

Date/Time: Saturday, September 26, 2026, 12:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the Elm Room at the Clark Park Recreation Center. Gouache (pronounced “gwash”) is an opaque water-based paint made of natural pigments, water, and a binder like gum arabic. We wanted more of his creative inspiration, and he agreed to lead this workshop! Ed Sprafkin Speaker’s Website: Ed’s Website link Bio: Edward Sprafkin is an impressionistic painter whose favorite subjects include landscapes, portraits, and figures. He strives to create a great sense of depth, mood, and atmosphere in his paintings, regardless of their scale. Edward pulls from many resources in his training: Classes and workshops at various institutions, including the Art Students’ League of New York and the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona. Edward is just as passionate about teaching as he is about painting. He offers online and in-person instruction at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, enjoys sharing his knowledge and finds inspiration in seeing students’ progress to new skill levels. His work has been featured in American Artist Magazine, juried, and shown from coast to coast, including the Salmagundi Club in NYC and private collections throughout the United States and abroad. In this friendly, hands-on workshop, you’ll discover how to blend the soft, see-through look of watercolor with the bold, colorful strokes of gouache—all in one project. Edward will guide you step-by-step through simple color mixing, layering, and blending exercises. You’ll have lots of time to try new techniques, ask questions, and create your own painting. With plenty of encouragement and personal feedback from the instructor, you’ll finish the day feeling excited and confident about combining these two fun painting mediums.
