Hairspray is about a plus-size teenage girl named Tracy Turnblad in 1962 Baltimore who becomes a local celebrity on a dance TV show and uses her newfound fame to challenge racial segregation on the program and in her city. The story, adapted from a 1988 film, follows Tracy as she integrates the show and promotes a message of acceptance for people of all races and body types.
