LISTEN ABOUT THIS SHOW Local family bands Spaceport and Robot Slide come together to co-headline an extra-special collaborative show celebrating the release of their sophomore albums Cut the Lake and CHIMPS. They’ll be playing musical chairs on stage with two mixed sets, collaborating and sharing members to bring a unique mix of weird pop and indie rock to The Cedar stage. ROBOT SLIDE Minneapolis based Robot Slide is a family band–Brothers Matt, Jake, and Todd Olson and their good friend Liam Moore have been playing music together in different combinations for the past 15 years. Using an array of digital production tools, samplers, and acoustic instruments, Robot Slide laces the textural, world-building elements of electronic music with the sensitivity and beautiful imperfections that arise in live band performance, resulting in complex, interweaving tapestries of digital and organic sound. Since their 2022 release EXTEND, the group has focused on making more space for each other; to approach their relationships and the music with patience, vulnerability, and acceptance. They encouraged each other to simplify, to unearth the ways in which they can play as one ‘organism’, giving time for the songs to evolve and find their final forms over the span of several years. Self-recorded and produced by the band in their DIY garage studio, their sophomore LP CHIMPS evokes a dreamstate, the scenery constantly changing, shifting subtly from one unexpected moment to the next. If their debut Window Seat was a sci-fi movie, this record is a fantasy novel. “I wanted the songs to evoke exploration and adventure: deciphering glyphs in a city skyline, or decoding the map etched into a frozen pond,” says multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Arianna Wegley. Wegley’s lyrics are like the northern cousins Karly Hartzman of Wednesday’s southern storytelling, taking inspiration from a wide range of texts, from Delaney’s Dhalgren to Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The music, with its mix of guitars, drums, sy...
