Lecturer at George Washington University, Jung-Sil Lee Ph.D., examines how women artists have challenged conventional representations of femininity by treating gender not as a fixed identity, but as something constructed, performed, and continually negotiated through images, bodies, cultural expectations, and social power. In this talk, Dr. Lee will explore how Cindy Sherman’s use of photography, disguise, costume, gesture, and staged personas to expose the artificiality of stereotypical female identities in Western visual culture and then place Sherman in dialogue with Korean feminist art, which has confronted different but interconnected systems of gender representation shaped by Confucian patriarchy, colonial modernity, rapid industrialization, nationalism, mass media, and contemporary consumer culture.
