Stripmall Ballads is the musical project of Phillips Saylor Wisor. He writes songs about the places people drive through and the places they leave behind. The songs move along rivers and back roads, through small towns, parking lots, floodplains, and streets where the stores have changed names more times than anyone can remember. There are workers, drifters, preachers, lovers, and ghosts in them. Some are looking for something. Some have already lost it. Wisor draws from old Appalachian traditions and the hard facts of modern life. He tells these stories plainly and lets them carry their own weight. Onstage, Phillips is a memorable and restless performer. He sings with conviction, plays banjo and guitar with purpose, and knows how to hold a room. He can make people laugh, then grow quiet, then lean forward to hear what comes next. His songs find beauty in neglected places and mystery in ordinary lives.
