Night Sky Viewing with Southern Vermont Astronomy Group Friday, October 23rd from 7pm - 9pm at The Nature Museum Registration is encouraged, participation by sliding-scale donation Night Sky Viewing Experience If skies are clear, all are welcome to observe the Moon, Saturn, and a variety of stars and structures in our galaxy through telescopes while Physics and Astronomy teacher Erik Schmitt and other members of the Southern Vermont Astronomy Group talk about the science and history of humanity's relationship to and exploration of our cosmic neighborhood. Bring your warm coats, socks, and gloves as well as your questions and ideas because Q&A and discussion will be plentiful and encouraged! “Exploration and Colonization of Our Solar System: It's Hard To Not Die” If the celestial skies aren’t viewable, join us for an alternative talk that will give a look into theoretical life in space. If a ship was departing for the Moon, Mars, Venus, or one of the many moons of the outer solar system, would you want to be on it? So far, only 24 humans have ever set foot on another celestial body. What problems must we solve for that number to become 240, or 2,400, or 24,000? Should we even endeavor to go ourselves, or should we send our increasingly autonomous machines in our place? Before you sign that waiver and climb aboard, you may want to know that there's a pretty good chance you'll die, especially if you are one of the first ones to make the journey. Join us and find out how and perhaps develop a greater appreciation for Earth, despite its own troubles and challenges. The talk will also take place outdoors under the Danforth Pavilion. Please come prepared for the weather!
