TALK TITLE: Assignment North Korea: The Failed Attempts to Halt Their Nuclear Weapons Program The event is by donation to the Odd Fellows Hall MARK SCHANFEIN BIO: Mark has over 48 years of experience in international and domestic safeguards, and nonproliferation, at six US national laboratories. His primary experience was 20 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), half in the nuclear weapons program and half in the nuclear nonproliferation program. Over the course of his career at LANL, he was sent to Russia after the collapse of the USSR to assess the security of their nuclear material, and he served as part of the on-the-ground technical team in North Korea under the Six-Party Talk negotiated under President G. W. Bush. He also had eight years of experience working at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, serving four years as a safeguards inspector and four years as the manager for the Unattended Monitoring Systems division. In this position, he was responsible for the installation of all IAEA unattended monitoring systems that track nuclear material in nuclear fuel cycle facilities worldwide. Currently, Mark is a contractor providing services to US national laboratories and domestic companies.
