New York-based koto player Yoko Reikano Kimura and cellist Hikaru Tamaki create a fusion of sound that is inspired by tradition, but with a contemporary sensibility. Duo YUMENO’s repertoire includes a dynamic range of compositions, all of which explore the dialogue between traditional Japanese music and classical western music. Yumeno means “dream-like,” which is appropriate given the extent that both instruments are steeped in respective traditions of Romanticism. Since 2008, Kimura and Tamaki have collaborated on a series of commissions for this unique combination of instruments. This performance features the world premiere of Gene Coleman’s Kirigami, commissioned by the duo, as well as representative works from each of their genres. This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.
