In a time drenched in escapism, where an unceasing barrage of synthetic shine promises comfort and relief from facing the complexity of our natures, Taylor Kingman’s new album Hollow Sound is an antithetical long night in a solitary cave, with nothing but a small fire and a hard look inward to keep you company. Between his work fronting TK & The Holy Know-Nothings and his 2017 solo debut Wannabe, Kingman is no stranger to the darkness. But here he transcends the desolate rock bottom, as Hollow Sound whispers, then howls us into that place beyond brokenness where breathing begins again. To listen deeply to these songs is to lay down naked on the wet, unforgiving earth, pushing the ground through your fingers; it is to be soothed by the wholeness of who we are, filth and all. Kingman pulls no punches with his writing, and requires us to listen with the same honesty. It’s been hard for me to look at myself naked (from “Dead Bird’s Wing”) Mike Clark, a singer songwriter from Colorado best known for his band Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds was ready for a new challenge and direction when he started penning the words and concepts for what would become Stoneteeth. Cole Halvorsen, an audio engineer and musician from Reno, Nevada had recently returned home to Reno, NV after spending the last four years mastering his craft working with legendary Producer/Engineer Tucker Martine at Flora Recording & Playback in Portland Oregon. In the summer of 2024, the two met by chance as Halvorsen had been scheduled last minute to fill in as recording engineer on the most recent Sugar Sounds album (Hot Coffee). The two hit it off immediately and it became obvious that this was going to be an unstoppable collaborative duo. They met up in June of ‘25 in Halvorsen’s home studio with no idea of what was going to be made. Mike had lyrics written, very rough rhythmic ideas in beatbox form and a concept for a down on his luck character named Stoneteeth; derived from Clarks own life experiences and distaste for the wealthy elite and political profiteers. From the drop of the first note as Cole crafted the beats that would become the building blocks of an amazing album together they crafted track after track sometimes working through the night into the morning. It was boozy and loose, inspired and real with both men adding multiple instruments and stacking fat harmonies from the deep guttural growls to sultry falsettos. The pace was alive and inspired and the results are amazing. Stoneteeth is born. Now they head out into the world to perform these songs with several album release shows already in the works for 2026. Stoneteeth is a voice from the bottom, the gutter, the last penny in your pocket, the drunk sleeping at the end of the bar full of wisdom and cheap whiskey that you write off until they wake up and piss on your party.
