Alan Potter doesn’t just like animals; he holds them in awe, choosing to immortalize them in raku ceramics. Artists put low-fired (with glaze still bubbling) pieces into canisters of sawdust that ignites, and the vacuum creates exciting effects like the crackle glaze, iridescence, and matte finish characteristic of raku. Alan’s horses, donkeys, giraffes, cardinals, owls, and even Yetis holding balloons all bear his signature shapes and textures—and the fact that must maneuver pieces with tails and ears out of smoking containers just underlines his commitment to the (animal) form.
