About this event

8 Thursdays, July 9 – August 27 Age Level: 16 and up Experience Level: Intermediate and up Get fired up for this deep dive into Soda firing! Since the soda firing process may be done without a glaze, special slips, called flashing slips, are applied to leather-hard pieces, which produce various colors in the kiln when reacting with the atmosphere.  In the Soda Kiln, which is a gas-powered kiln, a reduction environment is maintained throughout the firing, turning the clay bodies darker in color. Soda ash is sprayed in the kiln when it reaches approximately 2300 degrees. It evaporates and forms a glassy surface, and creates unique reactions with slips. The kilns will be fired once to experiment with glazes and then a second time to use the knowledge gained to create intentional results. This class is open to intermediate and advanced students.    If a class or workshop is sold out, you may request to be added to the waitlist.  Union Project is committed to being accessible to all.
