Unique Photos from Local Artists Curated by retired art professor and artist, Nolan Preece, The Chemigram Show is now on display in the Bristecone Gallery on the campus of Western Nevada College. The exhibit features works from local artists who have studied the unique photographic process of chemigrams with Preece, a chemigramist since 1981. “Chemigrams allow photo artists a wide variety of mark-making possibilities and are in some respects a way of re-establishing the idea of the ‘handmade’ image in photography,” said Preece in the artist’s statement. This photographic process dates back to William Fox Talbot in the early 19th century and popularized by Belgian artist Peirre Cordier in the 1950s. The method of creating chemigrams images are photographs made without using a camera, an enlarger, or a lens; made in open light without a darkroom. Chemigram images depend almost entirely on the interaction of standard black and white photo chemicals with exposed photo paper, and in some cases, a variety of soft and hard resists applied to the paper. The “imagery” is created by the action and movement of photo chemicals as it encounters these resist objects on the surface of the paper. Artists The exhibit includes Nolan Preese’s work along with the following artists: Arika Perry, Vanessa Stephens, David Laws, Nancy Raven, Jeanne Chambers, Reed Colton, Joe Profita, Will Barber, Elaine Parks, Marvin Carabante, Kyle Karrasch, and Mike Clasen. Artists’ Reception An artists’ reception is planned for Tuesday, March 17 from 4-6:30 p.m. in the gallery to allow the public to meet the artists and learn more about their work. Nolan Preece will speak at 5:30 about the chemigram process. The gallery is free and open to the public, Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Located in the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City Campus, 2201 West College Parkway, Carson City.
