They are known for their exquisite, visceral songs, captivating live performances, and the occasional foray into theater. Their international profile rose significantly with the 2004 Drag City debut Family Album, and since then the group has toured seasonally across grassroots venues, nightclubs, theaters, and festival stages throughout the United States, Europe, the UK, Israel, and Oceania. Their new album, Counterclockwise, officially released in May 2025, marks their eighth full-length release with Drag City. Its songs and production create the most expansive and richly lived-in sonic world of their career to date. Faun Fables’ timeless “songtelling” practice is rooted in a holistic vision of life in music—one that honors the intimate details of home and family while elevating them through a mystical and fantastical lens. At the center is Dawn McCarthy, whose voice The New Yorker praised as “one of the more compelling instruments in contemporary music.” Her singing opens hearts and minds, moving effortlessly from a whisper to a rallying battle cry, drawing listeners into her mythic world. She is joined by creative partner Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), whose adventurous musicality and distinctive vocals help shape the band’s singular sound. Their daughters, having grown up alongside the band’s writing, recording, and touring since babies, now contribute additional vocals, flute, keyboard, bass, and percussion. Faun Fables are currently based in Nevada County, California. https://www.dragcity.com/artists/faun-fables https://www.facebook.com/faunfablesmusic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOmuohBsDHY https://youtu.be/k_vYbAClZCI The Heroes Are Horses Founded in 1998, The Heroes Are Horses built a world around the songwriting and open-tuned guitar of Mark Bradley-Shoup, the bowed upright bass of Jim Tate, and the effected radio and VHS of Kenny Burnap. Over time, Kenny moved away, Bob Stagner joined on drums, Marc Trovillion joined playing sounds and synths, and Ryan Dixon joined as songwriter and player of all things needing played. Since Covid, the group moved mostly to electric, but has kept the same focus on building worlds of sound, songwriting, listening with big ears, and playing with big hearts.
