Hands-on Suminagashi class in the Book Arts studio! “Suminagashi” is the Japanese traditional art of marbling as ‘floating ink’. The marbling process uses richly pigmented Sumi ink that floats above the water, which makes it easy to manipulate and create different patterns. A meditative-like process, the fluidity of the ink allows participants to follow their inner minds and freely express themselves. Suminagashi is a collaboration between the artist and their natural environments. This class is suitable for all age ranges and all skill levels are welcome. Once this workshop is completed, students will have an understanding of the basic Suminagashi processes. Projects will be one layer of Suminagashi printed on Kozo paper and two to five designs/prints per person. Suminagashi print sizes from 9”x7” to 14”x 9” (maximum). Suminagashi could be used as an individual art piece, postcard, book cover, etc. Things to note: • Makers of all skill levels are welcome. This class is suitable for ages 14+ • All necessary tools to participate are provided. Any questions about the class please email curious@wnybookarts.org SUDI WANG SuDi Wang (she/her) was born in Kunming, China and now lives in Buffalo NY, as a part-time printmaking artist. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Visual Art at SUNY Fredonia in 2021 and is currently studying for her MFA in Visual Art at the University at Buffalo. SuDi’s artworks focus on monster creations that were influenced by different cultures that she grew up with and around. Her work also includes suminagashi, book art, and zine publications.
