Ashes of Industry: 19th Century Charcoal Production in Northwestern Connecticut

Thursday, October 22, 2026 Local naturalists and historians Peter and Barbara Rzasa share the fascinating history of charcoal production in northwestern Connecticut (including right here at White Memorial!). The presentation will explore who built the area’s historic charcoal hearths, how charcoal was produced and used, and how remnants of these sites can still be identified today. The Rzasas will share stories of local colliers; the skilled workers who made charcoal, and display samples of charcoal dating back more than 150 years. Charcoal played a vital role in fueling Connecticut’s 19th-century iron, steel, and brass industries.
