Saturday, October 31, 2026 Join Peter Picone and Gerri Griswold for an unusual hike around one of the most intriguing gifts of land once owned by Alain and May White.  Shade Swamp was gifted to the State of Connecticut in 1934. This 500-acre parcel was dedicated to the protection and propagation of a variety of birds and mammals including foxes, porcupines, owls, hawks, skunks, opossums and more. Locals often referred to it as the “Farmington Zoo.” The parcel is also known for its wide variety of habitats. The Sanctuary was one of the major means by which the public could be acquainted with the work done by the State Board of Fisheries and Game (now the CT DEEP.) There are two trail systems on this hike (total about 3.5 miles) The Blue Trail (The Abandoned Zoo) Distance: 1.1 to 1.5-mile loop Highlights: This trail features the eerie remains of the zoo.
