Applications for the 2026 Muertos Mercado are now open! Applications close Aug 1, 2026 From pre-Columbian times, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin American countries. Today it is celebrated throughout the Americas on November 1 and 2, a time in which the living lovingly pay tribute and remember their departed friends and family members. Remembrances include family visits to the local cemetery, processions through town squares and inventive homemade altars honoring departed family members with photos, “Pan de Muerto” sweet bread and flowers. Individuals, families, groups, organizations and schools are invited to build an altar at the festival. The 2026 applications are now open. To learn more about the process click below. Email [email protected] The two-day event is free and open to the public, bringing together traditional art and culture with live music and entertainment to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Festivities include live music, original artwork, a dance, drum and puppet procession, live poetry, and the largest open altar exhibition in San Antonio. Food and beverage vendors available. DO I NEED MY ID? Yes. For anyone purchasing alcoholic beverages, please have a valid ID readily available. WHAT IF IT RAINS? This event is rain or shine. CAN I BRING CHAIRS AND A COOLER? No. There will be plenty of space to sit in Hemisfair and vendors to purchase food and drinks from. You are welcome to bring blankets. PET FRIENDLY Hemisfair is an open-air park and is dog-friendly. All well-behaved pups are welcome to join the festivities. We do ask pet parents to consider large, loud crowds when bringing their dogs.
