“The cosmos, in its infinite chaos, is bursting at its seams with love.”
— Steve Cannon
Presented by the Woodstock Juneteenth Board of Advisors in partnership with A Gathering of the Tribes, Woodstock Day School, High School of Fashion Industries, and local schools, Juneteenth: It Takes a Village — A Gathering of the Tribes is a multigenerational exhibition of visual art, spoken word, memory, and communal witness.
Featuring works by Yolène Legrand, Isabel Sáez, K. Thompson, Simi Sernaker (Simi Stone), playwright Melanie Goodreaux, journalist Sarah Ferguson, and others, the exhibition brings together visual art, poetics, memorabilia, oral histories, installation, film, and interactive media.
A Gathering of the Tribes reimagines the post-Beat spirit of Steve Cannon’s East 6th Street home in Loisaida, The Beautiful Migration traces movement from Loisaida to Woodstock through creative kinship, while Our Voices Carve the Sky uplifts young writers and artists through student-created works. Video game prototypes from the Playing With Purpose program feature students from the High School of Fashion Industries, including Bianca Rasheed — Rock Girls Project, Alisha Gomes — Project Code: What’s A Passion?, and Yazlin Solano — La Casa, carrying forward a lineage of imagination, migration, resistance, and collective storytelling.
