Join former Texas Poet Laureate, Emmy Pérez, for a discussion of the contemporary sonnet. This presentation will admire the ways in which writers such as Marilyn Nelson, Wanda Coleman, Terrance Hayes, Laurie Ann Guerrero, and more write about contemporary life and topics of pressing concern in their sonnets. Participants will engage in a writing exercise or two in relation to the poems we read. Whether or not contemporary sonnets are the outcome of the writing exercises, the goal is to encourage expression of what participants feel is urgent for them to write about at this moment in time and to consider how writing in contemporary forms can be helpful (or not) in addressing these topics. TUNE IN IF:  You want to learn more about the contemporary sonnet. You’re interested in reading and writing work about urgent themes and topics to our times. Please log in to find the button to RSVP.
