Erik Charlston is a versatile jazz vibraphonist and percussionist whose wide-ranging career spans jazz, classical, and popular music. Based in New York, he leads the vibrant JazzBrasil sextet, blending Brazilian rhythms with jazz improvisation. The group showcases Charlston’s rhythmic finesse and deep musicality, bringing fresh energy to traditional Brazilian forms. Originally from Chicago, Erik has performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, James Carter, Steve Coleman, Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, and others. He has taken the stage at Carnegie Hall with Sting, Billy Joel, and Elton John, and performed with Metallica at Madison Square Garden. Charlston has interpreted the music of Bernard Herrmann alongside Bill Frisell and the BBC Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Metropolitan Opera and on Broadway in productions such as Into the Woods and The Lion King. His film credits include Aladdin, Joker, Barbie, and Spielberg’s West Side Story, in which he also appears on screen. He has played with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Israel Philharmonic, and toured with the New York Philharmonic across five continents, including a rare performance in North Korea. Erik taught at the Manhattan School of Music for over 20 years, serving as co-chair of the percussion department. His recordings span Sony, Telarc, Nonesuch, EMI, and more, and he continues to perform chamber music throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
