Mark Gross is one of the leading alto saxophonists of his generation, celebrated for his soulful tone, commanding technique, and deep roots in the hard bop tradition. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Gross developed his musical voice through the rich gospel heritage of his family before studying at the Baltimore School for the Arts and earning a degree in Music Performance from Berklee College of Music. Since launching his professional career, Gross has become an in-demand performer, touring and recording with many of jazz’s most respected artists, including Buster Williams, Dave Holland, Delfeayo Marsalis, Nat Adderley, Mulgrew Miller, Nicholas Payton, Jimmy Heath, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Chambers, Regina Carter, and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. His powerful, blues-infused sound has often drawn comparisons to the great Cannonball Adderley, while maintaining a distinctive voice of his own. As a bandleader, Gross has released several acclaimed recordings, including Preach Daddy, Riddle of the Sphinx, and Blackside, earning praise for his compelling compositions and expressive playing. Beyond the jazz stage, Gross has appeared in Broadway productions including Swing and After Midnight, as well as in film and television. He continues to perform internationally as a dynamic soloist, bandleader, and one of today’s most respected jazz saxophonists.
