Misha Piatigorsky, winner of the 2004 BMI Thelonious Monk Composers Competition, is a dynamic pianist, composer, and producer known for fusing powerful melodies with driving rhythms. His distinctive sound bridges jazz, classical, and contemporary grooves, offering a fresh voice on the modern music scene. Originally from Moscow, Misha immigrated to the U.S. in 1981 and pursued jazz studies under pianist Kenny Barron, earning degrees from Rutgers and the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a full scholarship. Today, he is a sought-after performer, producer, and composer based in New York City. Misha has served as pianist and musical director for vocal jazz icon Mark Murphy, performing regularly at venues like Birdland, Iridium, and Dizzy’s Club, as well as on international stages. He has produced and arranged numerous albums, both as a leader and collaborator. His projects include Trio Del Sol with guitarist Freddie Bryant and percussionist Gilad, praised for their melodic interplay, and AYA, featuring his original compositions. His trio with Hans Glawischnig and Ari Hoenig explores the boundaries between jazz, classical, and urban grooves. Their debut album, Uncommon Circumstance, blends classical melodicism with popular rhythms. Beyond the stage, Misha composes for film and multimedia, with soundtrack credits including Chaos Theory, Pretty Persuasion, RX, and Danika. He continues to push musical boundaries through his work with vocalists, small ensembles, and genre-crossing collaborations, all while raising a family in New York.
