For more than three decades, world-renowned saxophonist and educator Abraham Burton has been a vital voice on the international jazz scene. Showcased as a soloist on two Grammy Award-winning albums and featured on dozens of recordings, Burton has collaborated with legendary artists including Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove, Louis Hayes, Roy Haynes, Eddie Henderson, Jackie McLean, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Jimmy Smith, Arthur Taylor, and Reggie Workman. Born and raised in Greenwich Village, Burton was immersed in the heart of New York’s jazz world from an early age. His passion led him to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & the Performing Arts, where he won awards from Downbeat Magazine and the McDonald’s Jazz Combo Competition. As a teenager, he was mentored by jazz greats such as Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Barry Harris, and Billy Higgins. A pivotal influence came from saxophonist Jackie McLean, under whom Burton studied at the Hartt School of Music, graduating with honors in 1993. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Music at Rutgers University. Burton’s professional career began with drummer Arthur Taylor and expanded into international touring, including appearances at the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, North Sea Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, and Pori Jazz Festival. With his own dynamic quartet, Burton has released acclaimed albums and appeared worldwide on television and radio. A longtime member of the Mingus Big Band, Dynasty, and Orchestra, Burton is also a dedicated educator, teaching at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz and Rutgers University, where he inspires the next generation of musicians.
