Fall in San Diego is sneaky. The weather barely changes, but the calendar fills right up: a festival of lights in Balboa Park, a harvest in Oceanside and a Saturday morning of making things, free. If we were building the perfect weekend, here's how it would go.
Thursday, 9pm: start early and loud
Why wait for the weekend? Acid Mothers Temple plays the Whistle Stop Bar at 9pm with Magick Potion and Sen K.
Saturday morning: make something, or walk the marsh
The FRONT Arte Cultura hosts a free screen printing workshop with Kelvin Lopez, 10am to 12:30pm, materials included (RSVP required). Or head to Chula Vista for the Sweetwater Safari Hike at 11:30: a walk on the Sweetwater Marsh Trail, on the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
Saturday, 4:30pm: Diwali in Balboa Park
This is the one. The Festival of Lights Diwali Celebration fills the Organ Pavilion from 4:30 to 10pm with cultural performances, food, vendors and music, hosted together by the San Diego Indian American Society, Ekal Vidhyalaya, SEWA International and House of India. Stay until dark. It's called the festival of lights for a reason.
Sunday: go north for the harvest
Drive up to Oceanside for Mellano Farm Stand's Pumpkin & Marigold Harvest Festival, 10am to 4pm: marigold fields, a corn maze and front-porch pumpkins, the start of six weekends of fall.
Everything else we'd squeeze in
Monday lunch, with a piano. Pianist Yumiko Oya plays a free mini-concert at noon at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla.
Find your thing in San Diego
That's our perfect weekend. Maybe that's a little aggressive for one weekend, but it's nice to live in a place that can offer all of that. Daisy brings together 4,203 things to do across San Diego, so build yours: see everything happening this week, browse arts and culture, outdoors or nightlife, or post your own event, free.
What is Daisy?
Daisy connects the event calendars of museums, farms, breweries, venues and libraries across San Diego in one place, so you hear about things before they happen, not the next day. Want this every week? Sign up for Find your thing in San Diego, the free weekly newsletter.
