Homeschool Enrichment Series: The Tempest: An Arts Encounter with Shakespeare’s The Tempest (Ages 13-18)

The Tempest is a four-week arts and literature class for ages 13+ centered on the journey of Prospero as he confronts power, control, forgiveness, and the question of how to act once one possesses knowledge and agency. Each class begins with discussion and clarification of the assigned portion of the play. Students will examine Prospero’s changing relationship to the island, to the people around him, and to his own power. In the second hour, students will create a landscape painting that represents where they understand Prospero to be at that point in his journey, drawing loosely on the compositional tradition of Taoist landscape painting. Over the course of the class, the three paintings will form a visual record of Prospero’s movement through the play.
