Carve a Hnefatafl Game Set Workshop with Maeve Gathje

The game of Hnefatafl, sometimes called the kings-board or kings-table, but today most commonly referred to as Viking Chess, was said to have been played by the Norse gods, and at Ragnarök, the end of the world, the pieces of the board were picked up to be played once again when the dust settled. In this course, students will practice flat-plane and chip-carving techniques to carve their own wooden Hnefatafl game pieces and create a game board. This class is a beginner-level woodworking class focused on knife cuts and embellishment techniques, also open to more experienced students who want a day-long course to focus on dry wood carving techniques through a repetitive process. Students may embellish their work as they see fit with decorative carving and colorful paint, and should expect to leave with a set of pieces ready to use right away. This is a delightful path into woodcarving and embellishment. Additional information: Advanced registration required. Suitable for ages 16+. A discounted youth price is available at checkout. All levels of experience are welcome. This is a great class to learn about carving if you have never carved before, or to hone in on technique if you are an experienced wood carver. Physical ability: Woodcarving requires good hand strength and flexibility, such as being able to open a pickle jar. A $60 materials fee is due to instructor Maeve Gathje in class.
