Try out an easy introductory basketry project by making a multipurpose tray out of willow. Tension trays are useful, beautiful, and happen to be the perfect project for a first time willow weaver. They can be used as trivets, soap trays, and even cooling trays for bread or cookies. In this short class, students will bend a frame and then weave in short pieces of willow to form their tray. This class is an excellent introduction for anyone curious about this sustainable and versatile basketry material. Students will head home with one tray and the basic understanding of how to continue making these accessible and small format trays at home. Additional information: Advanced registration required. Ages: Suitable for ages 12-15 registered alongside an adult, or 16+. Skill level: This class is open to all skill levels, and especially geared towards beginners. Physical ability: Basketry requires good hand strength and dexterity, such as being able to open a pickle jar. Materials: A $25 materials fee is due to the instructor in class and covers all materials and tools. Students will make at least one tray, small enough for a bar or soap or big enough for a loaf of bread.
