Studio Artist Spotlight: Kevin Byrd March 18 – May 1, 2026 Bethany Arts Community is spotlighting our studio artists for two-month periods, located in our first floor studio artist hallway entry (next to the performance space). Studio Artists are invited to curate and show their works throughout the year. Kevin Byrd is a New York-based abstract expressionist artist whose work explores the emotional and social fabric of contemporary life through bold colors, layered forms, and dynamic compositions. His creative journey began during his time in the armed forces, where he sketched fellow soldiers as a way to process and document his experience. Art became his passion and remained with him throughout his life. Following his military service, Byrd served as a Correction Officer, a role that deepened his understanding of human behavior and the complexities of society. He continued to nurture his interest in the human condition by pursuing higher education, earning a degree in Behavioral Sciences. In 2024, he completed his Master’s degree from SUNY New Paltz, further grounding his artistic practice in both academic and lived experience. Byrd’s work is influenced by the energy and innovation of artists like Jackson Pollock, Julie Mehretu, and Jacob Lawrence. Drawing inspiration from their ability to blend abstraction with narrative, Byrd creates paintings that speak to themes of resilience, identity, and transformation. He uses vibrant paint, fluid forms, and symbolic layering to construct visual stories that reflect both personal introspection and broader social commentary. Kevin Byrd continues to expand his artistic footprint through exhibitions, public art projects, and community engagement. His work not only reflects his own journey but also amplifies the voices and experiences of the people around him, blending passion, purpose, and paint into every canvas. In addition to painting, Byrd is dedicated to mentoring young artists and advocating for the role of creative expression in mental wellness and community healing. Whether through workshops, artist talks, or local collaborations, he remains committed to using art as a transformative force. With each new body of work, Byrd pushes the boundaries of abstraction while staying rooted in stories and experiences that shape our shared human world. On Bethany… My art studio at Bethany Arts Community became more than just a workplace—it became a sanctuary. The BAC represents faith, community, and inspiration. Within those walls, I discovered room to grow not only as an artist but as a person. It provided a place where creativity could breathe and ideas could transform into meaningful expressions. The atmosphere carries peace and encouragement that continually fuels my passion to create. The BAC means opportunity, connection, and spiritual grounding, reminding me that art is not simply displayed—it is experienced, shared, and used to uplift others through purpose.
