Natural History Paddle in the Boundary Waters

Tuesday-Friday, September 8-11 at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Join Naturalist Emily Stone on a four-day adventure in her favorite place on Earth. Learn about the unique natural history of the border country as you paddle and portage lightweight Kevlar canoes into moosey lakes with great fishing, beautiful vistas, and intriguing bays. You can gain the skills to plan your own voyage and enjoy the company of like-minded people on this partially outfitted trip. Register by: August 10 Cost: $525 member/$550 non-member (If you looked at the earlier version of the PDF below, it mistakenly said we might to a mile-long portage. That’s a holdover from a previous year. Here’s the updated answer to “How far will we travel?” How far will we travel? It depends on the group! The first time we did this route, we paddled into Gaskin Lake, which is 6 miles. Base camped, and then paddled out 6 miles. The second time we did this route, we just paddled in 3 miles, found a great campsite, and paddled out 3 miles. That makes for pretty leisurely travel. At a minimum, we’ll be doing a 51 rod and a 73 rod portage (in and out). At a maximum we’ll be adding a 20 rod and a 102 rod portage in each direction. Of course, we’ll be carrying our canoes and all of our gear over those portages. We’ll be renting Kevlar canoes from Rockwood Lodge and Outfitters. They weigh about 42 pounds.
