Dreams & Delirium centers on Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, a surreal landmark for voice and ensemble that follows a lovesick clown through fantasy, obsession, humor, violence, and madness. Featuring mezzo-soprano Maya Sypert, choreography and dance by Pei-Ling Kao, and Tresemble, this theatrical program brings Pierrot’s strange moonlit world vividly to life. Praised for her outstanding artistry, “vocal beauty of high technical caliber,” “vocal flare and flamenco abandon,” and “gifted storytell,” she has performed in opera, concert, and recital throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, and China. She has been a featured artist with Orquesta Sinfónico de Trujillo (Perú); Songs Across the Americas Festival (Bolivia); Bellingham Festival of Music; Bloomington Early Music Festival; Escuela de Artes Musicales, Universidad de Costa Rica; Auditorio Fabio Lozano (Bogotá, Colombia); Teatro Municipal (Trujillo, Perú), Tuscia Operafestival (Italy); Opera Fort Collins; Axelrod Performing Arts Center; Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra; Morris Choral Society; and Hawaii Opera Theatre. She has sung multiple times with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, most notably in concerts with renowned soprano Sumi Jo. She has performed regularly with pianist José Meléndez for almost 30 years, and they are thrilled to be frequent teaching artists for the Art Song Preservation Society of New York as the representatives for Spanish and Latin American art song. Maya Sypert holds a Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance and Literature with a minor in Music Education from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, and a Bachelor of Music degree with a minor in Italian Language and Literature from Binghamton University. She has studied with Mary Burgess, Laura Brooks Rice, Patricia Havranek, Virginia Zeani, and she currently studies with Andrea DelGiudice. Her publications have appeared in Classical Singer, The Mentoring Connection, Philosophy of Music Education Review, and the Choral Journal, and she is the author/editor of Guide to the Latin American Art Song Repertoire: An Annotated Catalog of Twentieth-Century Art Songs for Voice and Piano (Indiana University Press). In August 2007, she joined the distinguished faculty of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she serves as Associate Chair and Professor of Music with a world-class faculty. Pei-ling Kao Pei-Ling Kao is a Taiwanese choreographer, dance educator, and performer. Since moving to the U.S. in 2007, she has been working with choreographers of different aesthetic frameworks, collaborating with interdisciplinary artists, performing and teaching nationally and internationally, as well as presenting original work via her company PEILING KAO DANCES. Pei-Ling is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her research and creative interests are focused on movement improvisation, choreography, bicultural and hybrid movement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has received the OVPRS Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Work in 2025, the Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching Award in 2022, the Endowment for the Humanities Award in 2023 and 2018, and a Junior Faculty Research Award in 2018 from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Pei-Ling was awarded a San Francisco Bay Area’s Isadora Duncan Dance Awards in 2012 and was nominated for another in 2013. She was also a recipient of the Lo Man-Fei Dance Fund from Cloud Gate Foundation in Taiwan in 2016 and the MAP fund in 2021. Tresemble Chamber Music Hawai‘i coined the term “Tresemble” to describe its unique ensemble that combines instruments from all three resident ensembles. Tresemble concerts feature diverse chamber music pieces that don’t fit into typical categories, often including guest musicians like pianists, harpists, and vocalists to perform rarely heard repertoire. Sometimes, Tresemble concerts utilize a larger group of musicians to perform works such as Mozart’s “Gran Partita” for winds, Dvorak’s “Serenade,” or Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat.” Learn More Here
